After HP’s bombshell announcement last week that it was abandoning WebOS hardware, its Touchpad tablet went on a massive fire sale at just $99 for the 16GB version. Over the weekend my Twitter timeline was full of people scooping up Touchpads at these bargain basement prices and I was sorely tempted to join them.
But I didn’t and I’ve managed to stave off the temptation still. I know. I’m just as surprised as you are. How could I resist such a shiny, capable device at a price like that?
In our household, we already have 1 Kindle, 1 iPad, 3 iPhones, 2 Mac laptops, and 1 desktop Mac. There are only 2 of us in the house, not counting the dog. I couldn’t possibly justify another device like the Touchpad given all of this. Unless the dog suddenly gained opposable thumbs and a burning desire to read ebooks and browse the web on a tablet with a promising OS whose future is questionable. And I don’t see that happening any time soon.
My mom has intimated in the past that she’d like an iPad as a gift and the Touchpad would be a reasonable substitute on paper. But I know she’d be disappointed that it wasn’t an actual Apple iPad if I tried this so it wouldn’t be a good option as a gift either.
So, no Touchpad for me. I’m saving up for some new snowboarding gear for the upcoming season. And new tires for my car next year (those suckers are expensive). If you’re looking for one, it appears that some sellers are making them available for the final sale prices periodically on Amazon here.
