everythingiCafe: the Show “Skinny Hipster”
Episode 30 of the everythingiCafe podcast I co-host with Chris Meinck is now available for download through iTunes, or as usual you can listen to it right here using the audio player embedded above.
We talked about the latest iPhone 5 rumors, focusing on the most recent one from the Wall Street Journal claiming a “thinner and lighter” iPhone 5 (not simply an upgraded iPhone 4 dubbed the 4S or something similar) will debut in September. We also talked about a dubious iPad 2 rumor, Verizon’s new tiered data plans and the recent release of a jailbreak for the iPad 2 and other iOS devices running 4.3.3.
My “Teh Awesome” items this week were 2 iPhone apps: Plants vs. Zombies by Popcap Games and the recently-revamped Starbucks app. I know – I’m always late to get to some very popular games (I didn’t try Angry Birds until it had already been in the App Store for more than a year) and apparently the wildly popular Plants vs. Zombies was no exception. It’s been far more entertaining than I was expecting. Not to mention that I love zombies. Well, not “love” as in “strong, affectionate feelings” – I will happily shoot them in Left 4 Dead or any other game that allows me to inflict damage on the brain-eating fiends so Plants vs. Zombies is right up my alley (even though pea-shooting plants are less exciting than auto-loading shotguns in the end).
We’ll record the next episode next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. ET and you can join us live for the recording at everythingicafe.com/live. We also welcome questions about anything Apple-related – you can call 646-820-3431 and leave your name and your question and we’ll play it on the air and answer it.
I just ordered one of these babies
In my seemingly never-ending quest to find the ultimate replacement metal back for my iPhone 4, I stumbled across these beauties by Mas Elements in the forums at MacRumors. While they’re still not officially taking orders from the general public yet, I was able to order one of them today – I chose the Black Titanium one in the picture above.
I’ve tried several replacement metal backs for my iPhone and have been most happy with a beveled one from cnn.cn that looks just like this. However, it does produce a little vignetting with the camera lens and it makes the iPhone 4 a tiny bit thicker, which means it won’t work with any fitted cases. The flat backs I’ve purchased from eBay have all been flimsy and cheaply-made.
I think the iPhone 4 is a beautifully-designed device overall but I am quite disappointed with Apple’s materials selections here. Who in their right mind makes a highly-droppable piece of expensive electronics primarily out of glass? Really, Apple? Really? With that said, I take very good care of my iPhone in general and do my best to make sure it doesn’t get scratched, dropped or abused in any way (I have often sacrificed other items I was holding in order to not drop my iPhone).
The Mas Elements back should ship to me this week and I’ll thinking a review is in order for it so stay tuned.
everythingiCafe: the Show “The Blobs”
Chris Meinck and I recorded episode 29 of the everythingiCafe podcast last week and it’s now available for download through iTunes here or you can use the embedded audio player above (not available on iPhone or iPad – sorry!) to listen to it right from this page.
Chris and I talked about the latest iPhone 4S/5 rumors, official unlocking of iPhone 4’s in Apple Stores, the status of SHSH blobs in iOS 5 (it’s a jailbreak thing – listen for an explanation), and Final Cut Pro X and the negative reviews it’s earned so far.
Instead of a “Teh Awesome” recommendation this week, I talked about a “Teh Suck” which was the free version of Zynga’s new Hanging with Friends game given the obnoxious ads that take over the entire screen after every move. I did end up buying the paid version of the game simply to escape those ridiculous ads though I hated encouraging/rewarding Zynga with my money. However, it’s only $1.99 so I got over it.
We normally record the podcast at 7:00 p.m. ET every Tuesday and you can join us at everythingicafe.com/live for a live broadcast at that time. You can ask us a question that we’ll play on the air and answer by leaving us a message at (646) 820-3431. Also, please leave us a review in iTunes if you like the podcast!
